Women's Self Defense Seminar Series: COMBAT ELEMENTS
The self defense seminar series is divided into five major sections:
Not long ago a dear friend of ours was waiting in line for a Rockets game with
some girlfriends of hers.  Out of nowhere this guy in front of her decided for
whatever reason that he was going to punch her in the mouth.  She was wearing
braces at the time and her mouth was bloodied.  Before she overcame her
shock the brute left the line and ran off never to be seen again.

No one chased him.  No one stopped him.  There were many other men and
women in line, and everyone just stared in shock.  She was left in tears and with
a torn lip.  The attack was unprovoked and to this day she still doesn't know why
he did this.  She was intelligent.  She was with friends.  And she was in a well lit,
well crowded place.

She was still assaulted.

It is important that we live our daily lives intelligently.  We must always avoid
dangerous places and remain attentive to our surroundings.  Our demeanor
should convey confidence and readiness, never fear.  This will certainly help to
reduce our risk of attack.
But we all know of someone who has been assaulted either criminally or domestically.  In some cases the victim
survived.  In other cases they did not.  This is a reality that occurs in all corners of the world, and unfortunately, even
in this great country of ours, simply being aware and having a strong attitude is still not enough.  It is our responsibility
to follow the old boyscout and girlscout motto to always "be prepared."  And this means mentally as well as physically.
This will not eliminate our risk of attack, but it will insure that we will always have a better chance of surviving it.  And
with practice it will increase the chances that we will come through unscathed.  We will be empowered, not fearful.
Everyone needs to know how to defend themselves, and these simple
techniques can be taught to all segments of our society, be it adults or
children, men or women.  They work for everyone regardless of size and
strength.  Women are the focus in this course as many still do not believe
that any self defense system is adequate enough if the assailant is bigger
and stronger than they are.

Master Siytangco has designed this program in response to one of his
female students being accosted in her apartment complex by a drunk
neighbor.  He was twice her size and at least 100 pounds heavier than she
was.  However, due to her training in Chen Style Taijiquan she was able to
overcome him and throw her attacker to the ground.  Wisely, he did not get
up.  When the police got there, even with their experience, they were
shocked that such a small woman could dispatch such a large opponent.
Master Siytangco teaching a self defense technique
Self defense cannot be adequately understood in only one three
hour seminar.  And someone not used to the training of a martial
artist cannot really learn anything in an eight hour, intensive, one
day workshop.

The
Blue Dragon Kung Fu Self Defense Seminar Series gives
women 5 weeks of work shops (
Sections I - V) designed to provide
an in-depth analysis of self defense.
Sections I - IV will each
concentrate on one aspect of combat for three hours each.  This will
prove extensive, but not exhausting, and it allows the participants
time to digest and review the material.
Section V will then combine
the knowledge gained in the first four weeks in scenario-based
simulated attacks.
The techniques for this course are specially
selected so that a smaller, physically weaker
person can defend themselves against a larger,
stronger attacker.  They are simple and effective.

But make no mistake this will still be a physically
demanding class.  We will be defending in various
positions from numerous attacks, from punches,
kicks, and tackles to grabs, chokes, and bear
hugs to name few.  We will also be performing at
various speeds depending on the purpose.
When the student is learning a new technique we
go slow, but in order to make it realistic the
exercises will eventually be done at full speed and
with maximum power.   Your athleticism will be
challenged, but not stressed.  Be prepared to rise
to the challenge!
COMBAT ELEMENTS:
Hand to hand combat is classified into four basic
elements.  These are
Ti (kicking), Da (hitting), Shuai
(grappling, wrestling, throwing), and
Na (controlling).
Ti includes all the techniques involving striking with
any part of the legs and feet.  Da includes all strikes
with any part of the arms and hands.  Shuai is any
technique used to imbalance, throw, or grapple with
an opponent.   And Na are the techniques used to
maintain control of an opponent.  Within the
Blue
Dragon Kung Fu Self Defense Seminar Series
we
will examine each of these elements separately.  And
then we will combine these elements into a cohesive
understanding where one technique can easily flow
into another as the situation demands.
Section II will start with a brief review
of the first workshop, and then focus
on primarily kicking techniques (Ti)
and defense against them.
on throwing and stand up grappling
these situations.(Shuai) as well as
defending against these situations.
Section IV, after another review, will
teach controlling techniques (Na) and
escapes from similar attacks.
Section V will teach the students how
to combine all these elements into a
cohesive response to an unsolicited
violent attack.  In the fifth segment the
students will have to defend
themselves against a padded
mock-assailant so that they can
experience the techniques with full
power and maximum speed.
